Why Big Ben Go Silent?

The Great Bell has chimed nearly every hour for the past 157 years. It has had previous breaks in service for maintenance and conservation in 2007, in 1983~1985 and in 1976. The 13.7-ton bell, which was forged in the 1850s, is accompanied by smaller chimes that ring out each quarter hour.

Quieting Big Ben's mighty bongs will help preserve the hearing of workers involved in the project.

(from npr.org)

What will be fixed on the clock?

  • Work to prevent the clock mechanism from failing, as it is currently in a chronic (严重的) state.

  • Addressing urgent problems caused by decay (腐烂) to the fabric (结构) of the building, both internally and externally.

  • Health & safety and fire safety improvements, including installation (安装) of a lift.

  • Enhanced energy efficiency through modern lighting of the tower face and other measures.

What do people & the

government react?

It can't be right for Big Ben to be silent for four years.

It is quite simply that we can't have the bells working with those people adjacent to (邻近的) it. It simply isn't practical to do that.

Starting and stopping Big Ben is a complex and lengthy (很长的) process.

Big Ben falling silent is a significant milestone (里程碑) in this crucial conservation project. This essential programme of works will safeguard the clock on a long term basis, as well as protecting and preserving its home.

“A silent Big Ben will be super eerie. I could hear the chimes from my room in Euston, they’re the sound of London!”

—tweeted Rob,

a history student at King’s College

“It will be very sad, but it needs to be done.”

—Kirsten Hurrell, a news agent who runs a busy stall (货摊)

that faces the clock tower

“It’s going to be different. You’re going to have to rely on looking at your watch, looking at your phone, instead of listening to the bongs. It would be weird at first not to hear it going by your room.”

—Oliver Harris, a flight attendant

See you in 2021!
