On Dec.2nd 2017, Martin Phelan, the International Director of Northern Powerhouse-Investment of Department for International Trade, UK and Marg Parton, the specialist of Northern Powerhouse visited the University of Central Lancashire (hereinafter refer as to “ UCLan”). Dr. John Lonsdale, Director of Innovation and Enterprises of UCLan and Palace Peng, General Manager of UCLan Technology (Shenzhen) Ltd. attended the meeting.
The Northern Powerhouse is an initiative, proposed by the Department for International Trade, UK, to boost economic growth in the North of UK. The initiative is based on urban agglomeration and aims to reposition the British economy away from London and the South East. The area, where UCLan locates, is home to 15.2 million people, and contains 5 of the UK’s 10 largest cities and generates 19% of UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Its levels of foreign direct investment (FDI) are growing at twice the rate of the rest of the UK. This region has a great potential in the field of innovation, entrepreneurship and business. Two parties exchanged thoughts about the preparation of UK Innovation Centre which UCLan is involved. Mr. Phelan addressed that this will be a milestone in the China-UK cooperation related to science and technology innovation. He added that on behalf of the Northern Powerhouse, he will support the preparation of UK Innovation Centre, providing work-space, talents, consulting and other required information to help it complete and develop successfully.
The UK Innovation Centre is built by Kaisa Tech. Group, Luohu Hospital Group, Shenzhen University, and UCLan (listed in no particular order). The goal is to establish an overseas incubator based in the north part of UK and a domestic accelerator based in Shenzhen, which has two bi-directional engines combining not only an overseas pre-incubation, but also a domestic accelerator to help overseas start-ups to improve their projects and build their teams, integrate domestic landing resources, improve the transition rate of overseas projects and provide one-stop with the model of “Talent Supply + Industry R & D + Project Landing + Business Services” Industry-Academic-Research cooperation. Currently, the four parties have assigned the MOU and UK Innovation Centre has been in a tense period of preparation.
